Plant based oils are made up of many fatty acids. When researching the properties of oils and what they are made up of we come to a better understanding of how they can benefit the skin in specific ways based on their fatty acid profile. Gamma-Linolenic Acid is a particular fatty acid that is extremely beneficial for the skin. It is one of the best fatty acids in promoting a smooth and supple appearance to the skin, soothing irritations, calming inflammation, and supportive of healthy skin function.
WHAT IS GAMMA LINOLENIC ACID (GLA)?
GLA is an Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid which is an essential fatty acid for human health. Omega-6's are one of the basic building blocks for lipid health in the body. Our body cannot produce them naturally so we get them through food and more specifically through plant oils.
WHICH OILS HAVE IT?
Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) is most commonly found in Evening Primrose Seed Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Black Currant Seed Oil and Borage Seed Oil.
WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?
As mentioned in the beginning of this article, GLA is one of the best fatty acids in promoting a smooth and supple appearance to the skin, soothing irritations, calming inflammation, and supportive of healthy skin function.
The skin is our largest organ and it’s made up of countless cells that rely on fatty acids like GLA to stay resilient and supple, inside and out. When there is deficiency of fatty acids the structure and functions of the skin are significantly affected. This is characterized by dry, sensitive, or irritated skin. Transepidermal water loss is another indicator that the skin is in need of fats like GLA to help seal in hydration and retain moisture.
This important fatty acid helps maintain the skin’s moisture and elasticity as we age. The proper functioning of skin cells depends upon healthy membranes, acting as gate-keepers to maintaining a healthy epidermal barrier function that keeps moisture locked in while keeping toxins out.
